Consultation and hair assessment
A consultation is required before booking a perm at Retro Cuts. During that conversation or in-person assessment, we evaluate hair condition, service history, and your desired outcome to determine whether a perm is a safe choice. We will not perform a perm without this prior consultation, because safety and realistic expectations are essential for a good result.
The assessment looks at previous color or chemical work, breakage, length and natural texture, and overall porosity. Because clients in the Thunderbird Corridor and surrounding Phoenix neighborhoods often spend time outdoors or commute via Loop 101, we also consider lifestyle factors — sun exposure, pool use, or golf and hiking routines that can influence aftercare and styling choices.
How perms change hair shape
A perm reshapes hair by setting it around form and using a professional process to alter internal bonds so strands hold a new pattern. The resulting curl or wave depends on sectioning, form size, and your hair’s natural characteristics. Results are a combination of chosen shape and the hair’s ability to accept and hold that shape after the service.
Because everyone’s hair responds differently, the consultation determines readiness and the most suitable approach. The in-salon perm service is scheduled as a 180 minutes appointment and priced at $80; the consultation must precede booking and may lead to preparatory steps or alternative styling suggestions to achieve safe, lasting texture.
Aftercare and longevity factors
Aftercare and daily habits strongly influence how long curls or waves maintain their intended look. In Phoenix’s desert climate, dry air and seasonal monsoon humidity both affect curl definition and frizz; your stylist will recommend routine adjustments, product types, and styling techniques aligned with outdoor activities like golf, hiking, or frequent pooling.
There are trade-offs to consider: a perm changes hair structure, so future chemical services depend on hair health. That is why Retro Cuts insists on a prior consultation to confirm candidacy and to plan any necessary treatments or timing for other services. Proper planning helps protect hair and extend satisfaction with the finished style.
