Money Piece aftercare: the first 2 weeks (so your face-frame stays bright)
By Retro Cuts | July 28, 2026
Our biggest rule after a Money Piece -consultation Required is simple: keep it dry and low-sweat for the first 48 hours. That window matters, especially here in Phoenix where heat, sun, and pool days can fade a bright face-frame fast. If you protect those first two days, the highlight usually stays cleaner, brighter, and easier to style.

Quick reality check: a money piece sits right at your hairline and cheeks, so it sees the most sun, the most sweat, and the most heat styling. The goal for the first two weeks is to keep the blonde hydrated and protected so it doesn’t go dull or brassy.
First 48 hours: the 4 things that protect your Money Piece most
Think of the first two days as “set time.” We generally recommend keeping your hair dry, cooler, and product-light so your color holds the way we intended.
1) No washing or getting it wet. Skip shampoo, skip rinsing, and try not to soak it in the shower. If you need a refresh, use a dry shampoo lightly and keep it off the freshly-lightened face frame as much as you can.
2) Keep sweating to a minimum. In Phoenix, that can be the hardest part. For 48 hours, choose a gentler walk over a hot class. If you do sweat, blot your hairline and let your roots fully dry. Don’t rinse “just the front” unless it’s truly necessary.
3) Hold off on hot tools. Freshly lightened ends tend to be more fragile. If you must style, use the lowest heat that works and keep the iron moving. No slow passes on the face-framing pieces.
4) Don’t pile on oils or heavy masks yet. We love moisture, just not right away. The first couple days are better with leave-in sprays and lighter conditioning, then bring in the heavier hydration after your first wash.
Days 3 to 7 in Phoenix sun: wash smart, avoid chlorine, and don’t cook the front
Once you’re past the 48-hour mark, your money piece maintenance is all about keeping the blonde clean and conditioned without stripping it. That’s also the week most people accidentally fade their face-frame with sun, outdoor workouts, and pool time.
Your first wash
Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. Lukewarm water beats hot. Concentrate shampoo at the scalp, let the suds rinse through the ends, and condition well. If the face frame feels a little drier, that’s normal. Don’t “scrub” the lightened pieces like you’re trying to remove glue.
Pool season rules (especially week one)
We recommend avoiding pools for at least a week if you can. Chlorine can shift blonde tone and leave the ends feeling rough. If you can’t skip it, rinse your hair immediately after and follow with conditioner. And if your money piece starts feeling straw-like, pause the heat styling and focus on moisture for a few days.
Thunderbird Corridor tip: a lot of our clients book earlier in the day so their money piece is styled before outdoor plans like golf or a hike. If that’s you, plan a quick style, low heat, and a UV-protectant spray before you head out.
Sun exposure
Phoenix sun is intense, and the money piece sits right where the sun hits first. Use a leave-in with UV protection if you’re going to be outside, and consider a hat for long stretches. That small habit keeps your face-framing highlight brighter between visits.
Products and habits we lean on for face-framing highlight care
We keep aftercare simple. You don’t need a shelf full of stuff. You need the right basics used consistently.
- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo: helps slow fading and keeps the blonde from looking dull.
- Conditioner every wash: the money piece is lightened, so hydration is not optional.
- Heat protectant before any hot tool: spray or cream is fine. Use it even if you “just do a quick bend.”
- Leave-in moisture or UV spray: great for Phoenix sun and for reducing that dry, fluffy look around the face.
- Silk or satin pillowcase: less friction on the face-framing pieces, and it helps your style last longer.
About purple shampoo: only use it on the money piece if we’ve told you it’s a good fit for your tone. Overdoing it can leave the front looking flat or slightly tinted, especially on porous ends.
Brassiness, sweat, and heat styling: the quick fixes that actually help
A little warmth showing through doesn’t always mean “bad color.” In week one and two, brassiness often comes from sun exposure, hot tools, or product buildup at the hairline.
If your money piece looks warmer than you want
- First, reduce heat for a few days and double down on conditioner and leave-in moisture.
- Make sure you’re using a color-safe shampoo and not a “clarifying” wash every time.
- If we recommended a purple shampoo, use it sparingly and only on the face-framing pieces. Let us know if you’re unsure on timing.
- If you’ve been in the pool, rinse immediately after swimming and condition right away.
If you’re working out outdoors in Phoenix
Sweat and sunscreen around the hairline can build up fast. Try a headband that doesn’t snag, keep the hairline as dry as possible, and plan a gentle wash with good conditioner after heavy sweat days once you’re past that first 48-hour window.
When to reach out to Retro Cuts, plus touch-up timing
If something feels off, ask. We’re big on listening and checking in, and that doesn’t stop when you leave the chair. As one client put it, “She’s skilled, attentive, and clearly takes pride in her work.” That same energy applies when you need aftercare help too.

Reach out if: your money piece feels unusually dry or gummy after washing, you notice a tone change after pool time you can’t correct, or you’re not sure which shampoo to use for your hair type.
Touch-up timing depends on your natural color, how fast your hair grows, and how bright we took the face frame. If you’re outdoors a lot in Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, or anywhere around the Thunderbird Corridor, sun and pool exposure can make you want a gloss or refresh sooner. We serve Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, and Tempe, and we’re happy to plan maintenance around what your weeks actually look like.
Want us to map out your next few weeks? Tell us how often you’re in the sun, if you swim, and how you like to style the front. We’ll keep your money piece bright without overdoing the processing.
